Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Swimming Lesson Registrations

When are classes held?

Tukwila Pool offers several levels of classes to fit a variety of needs.  Each session generally includes 4 to 8 classes held over four weeks.  This means a new series of classes starts every month.  Tukwila Pool staff will happily provide you with advice on the appropriate level class and specific times and dates.  Classes are generally offered either Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday afternoons between 4:00 and 8:00 pm. From June 25 through August 17th we offer two-week daily morning sessions.  We also offer Saturday sessions between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.  Sunday sessions are available during the Women Only swim on Sundays from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. If enough men indicate a commitment to attend, the pool also may open up lessons during the Thursday night Men Only swim.  Click here to see the currently available classes and times.

How do I know what level to sign my child (or myself) up for?

Individuals who have never been in swimming lessons before should sign up for level 1 of the class best for their age. We encourage parents of children under 3 to sign up for Parent and Tot classes, children 3 – 6 years of age to sign up for Minnow 1 class and Children 6 -12 to sign up for Shark 1 classes. We also offer Adult classes for adults who are just learning to swim.  Teens are welcome to join adult classes or Shark level classes depending on their comfort and maturity level.

If you or your child has already had swimming lessons we can help you determine the best level to register for by asking a few questions about the registrant’s swimming ability and comfort in the water. Please call or come in and we’d be happy to help you. We can also arrange an in-water skills test to determine the best course level for your or your child.

What if we end up in a class that is not a good fit?

Our Swim Instructors will be happy to work with you to find a class that is a good fit for you or your child. Let your instructor know if your child is finding a situation challenging and they will develop a plan with you.

What if our schedule changes and we aren’t able to attend the classes we registered for?

We would be happy to transfer your registration to another session of swimming lessons with openings before the the first day of class.  Should your schedule require a change after the first day of class, staff will work with you on a case by case basis as space allows.  Refunds are available for medical reasons only, with a doctor’s note.

What do lessons cost?

Group lessons are priced based upon the number of scheduled sessions, multiplied by $6.00 for Tukwila residents and $7.00 for non-residents. So a Saturday class that meets once a week for four weeks would cost $24 for Tukwila residents, and $28 for non-residents.  A twice a week class with eight total sessions would cost $48 for Tukwila residents, and $56 for non-residents.

Can I apply for assistance to help pay for lessons?

Yes!  Scholarships for swim lessons are available to Tukwila residents and those who attend school in Tukwila (or who live in Tukwila and attend Highline schools).  Click on Swim Lesson Scholarships for more information, policies and application.
