History
The Tukwila Pool, built in 1973 through King County’s “Forward Thrust” project, has long served as a vital resource for local youth and families. Originally owned by King County and later the City of Tukwila, the pool was saved from closure in 2011 when voters created the Tukwila Pool Metropolitan Park District (TPMPD), a publicly funded special-purpose district. Governed by an independently elected Board of Commissioners since 2015, the TPMPD ensures the pool remains accessible and sustainable for future generations, supported by both tax levies and community use through lessons, rentals, and programs.
Taxing Authority
The Tukwila Pool Metropolitan Park District (TPMPD) is a Special Purpose District that is funded by Tukwila residents and businesses through property taxes for the sole purpose of providing a community pool.
The voter-approved special tax (levy) is currently being assessed at $0.15 for every $1000 a property is valued by King County. These funds are used to operate and maintain the Tukwila Pool.
There is additional taxing authority available (banked capacity) that the TPMPD has not yet assessed.
Governance
The Tukwila Pool Metropolitan Park District (TPMPD) is governed by an independently elected 5-member Board of Commissioners. The TPMPD Commissioners work hard to ensure that public funds are spent in a responsible manner.
